The Smiths


Patrick Smith and Lucy Smith. Husband and wife or brother and sister. In Dublin c. 1758-1760. Possible son:

Edward Smith of Moynalty and Smith Park, Meath. Five sons and two daughters:

1. Edward Smith of Gloucester St, Dublin. Wife Elizabeth. Had land in Mullinagoward and Leitrim in Co. Cavan. Died c. 1813.

2. Philip Smith of Cherrymount, Co. Meath. Married Ann Plummer. He had a third son named Francis, and a son Philip junior, who was named in Kings Inn Admissions ed. TCD 1815.

3. Arthur Smith, granted Granby Row in Dublin c. 1813.

4. Patrick Smith, two sons - Patrick Smith and Moore Smith.

5. Eleanor Smith, married a Mr O'Hara. Two known children, Henry and Anne O'Hara, alive c. 1813.

6. Unknown sister seems to have married a Mr Gregory. Only known son Major Edward Gregory of the 44th Regiment of Foot, alive c. 1813.

7. James Smith, a barrister, married Elizabeth. Died before 1813. Named in Kings Inn Admissions - matriculated 1777. His only son was:

7.1 Edward Smith of Charlemont Mall and later of Fitzwilliam Square, Co. Dublin, born ca. 1772, married Catherine Huband, born ca. 1779. He died December 1842. This couple may be named in Walkers Hibernian Magazine with her surname wrongly spelled as Hubard. "Edward Smith = Miss Hubard, dau. of Joseph of Peter Street, Sept. 1796 p. 287." Catherine died October 1868, and she and Edward are buried in the Mt Jerome cemetery, Co. Dublin. This couple had two sons:

7.1.1 James Smith was born Dublin c. 1799, educated by Dr Leney, entered TCD 7 Oct 1816, BA 1821, MA 1832. After ordination he was appointed to Island Magee where he was Curate and then Rector (1826-1849). On promotion to Archdeacon of Connor he moved to the Parish of Billy (1849-1865). He married Jane Taylor and had two sons, Edward Fitzjames (b 1840) and James Howard (b and d 1842). He died 25 February 1865 at Greenisland, Co. Antrim. He left an estate of about 3,000 pounds to Jane Smith of same address, widow and sole executrix. A strange reference in Kings Inn Admissions states of his son, Edward Fitzjames Smith, that he was educated at Tarvin Hall, Cheshire, England, and "has been searching for gold in Australia". E. 1860 and under 27 years old. An Edward Fitzjames Smith married at Rathmines, Dublin in 1866 and died in Dublin in 1877.

7.1.2 Joseph Huband Smith married Cecilia Catherine Jephson of Mullabrack, Co. Armagh, in 1835. Joseph died in 1886. He did not leave any will.

Further information about the Smiths of Cherrymount, Moynalty, Co Meath is as follows:

* the Rev. Philip Smith, formerly of Moynalty, Co Meath, died in Paris on 10 January 1862, aged 67 years. His eldest son Philip predeceased him, dying at Naples on 24 September 1850, aged 19, of "internal inflammation". His fifth daughter Isabella was married to Richard Beardsley, Esq., of Indiana, USA, on 9 October 1867. This marriage took place at Naples, at the British Consulate and the English Church.
* Anne, relict of the late Philip Smith, of Cherrymount, died 26 June 1856 at Shepperton, Co Clare.
* Samuel Smith, Esq., formerly of Cherrymount, Co Meath, died 31 October 1871 at Rathgar, in his 74th year. He was a JP for the counties of Meath and Cavan.
* Samuel's son Philip was married on 28 March 1884 at Kensington to Isabella Anne, daughter of the late Richard Harris, Esq.
