Obituary for Harry Hood Bentley


The death of the late Mr Harry Hood Bentley, A.F.I.A., F.A.I.S., took place yesterday morning. The deceased was born in British Kowloon, China in 1881, and was the only son of the late Captain Thomas Bentley, of the sailing ship “Earl Cadogan”, and Mrs Bentley. He was educated at Weston-super-Mare, Somersetshire, and settled in Sydney with his parents in 1896. In 1899 he joined the Colonial Sugar Refining Company’s service, and in 1900 went to manage a plantation at Fiji for the company.

After his marriage to Miss Ethel Annie Hall, eldest daughter of the late Mr T.M. Hall and Mrs Hall of Corinda, in 1911, Mr Bentley engaged in cane farming at Ayr, North Queensland for five years. Later he became manager of the Silverwood Dairy Company’s butter factory at Terror’s Creek (now Dayboro). In 1917 he entered the service of the C.C.M. Company as secretary and warehouse manager, and remained there for over five years, resigning to take up the position of business manager of the Queensland Producers’ Association, and secretary and accountant to the Council of Agriculture. From 1927 to 1931 he was assistant manager of Messrs. E.C. Eager and Sons Ltd., and since 1931 he had been in practice as a public accountant.

The deceased was a nephew of Mr D.F. Denham, former Premier of Queensland. As a resident of Corinda for the past 17 years, the late Mr Bentley took an active part in the public affairs of the district. Besides his widow, he leaves a family orf three daughters, Misses Minnie, Edna, and Marion Bentley, and one son, Master Tom Bentley.

Bentley - The Funeral of the late Harry Hood Bentley will leave his residence, corner Nelson St and Hall Avenue, Corinda, this (Thursday) Forenoon at 10 o’clock for the St Matthew’s Church of England Cemetery, Sherwood.
